What the engine warning light means

The colour, and whether it flashes, tells you how urgent it is.

Steady amber
Usually a less serious fault, often to do with emissions. Get it checked soon
Flashing amber
More serious, for example a misfire. Get it checked straight away
Red
A critical fault. Stop when it's safe and call your breakdown cover

How a diagnostic check works

  1. 1

    Tell us what's happening

Call, send a WhatsApp or use the quote form. Which light is on, and anything the car is doing differently, helps us most.

  2. 2

    We find the cause

We read the fault codes and check the parts they point to, then tell you what's wrong and what the repair will cost.

  3. 3

    We fix it

Once you've said yes, we carry out the repair and let you know when the car is ready.

Warning lights and the MOT

An engine warning light that stays on is an MOT failure. The MOT inspection manual lists an engine malfunction indicator lamp that's "inoperative or indicating a malfunction" as a major defect. If your MOT is coming up and the light is on, get it looked at first. See MOT preparation and repairs.

A fault code is a starting point

A fault code tells you which system has reported a problem. It doesn't always name the part that has failed, so the car still needs checking before parts are replaced. That way you pay for the repair the car needs.

Common causes

The AA lists oxygen sensor faults, a blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF), mass airflow sensor problems, and spark plug or ignition coil faults on petrol cars among the usual reasons the light comes on.

Jobs we pass on

If the cause turns out to be DPF or EGR work, or a wider electrical fault, we'll tell you what we've found. Those are jobs we don't take on.

Our guarantee

Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months. Parts carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies from part to part.

Questions about car diagnostics

More answers on our FAQ page.

Is it safe to drive with the engine warning light on?

The AA says a steady amber light is usually less serious and you can normally finish your journey, but get the car checked soon. A flashing amber light needs checking straight away. A red light means stop when it's safe and call your breakdown cover.

Will my car fail its MOT with the engine light on?

Yes. The MOT inspection manual lists an engine warning light that's on, or not working, as a major defect, so get it checked before the test.

What makes the engine warning light come on?

Common causes listed by the AA include oxygen sensor faults, a blocked diesel particulate filter, mass airflow sensor problems, and spark plug or ignition coil faults on petrol cars.

Can a fault code tell you exactly what's wrong?

Not always. A fault code shows which system has reported a problem, so we check the car over to find the part at fault before quoting.

Are there faults you don't fix?

We don't take on DPF and EGR work or general electrical fault finding. If that's what we find, we'll tell you.
