What happens if a cambelt snaps
The cambelt keeps the engine's valves and pistons in time with each other. On many engines, if the belt snaps, the pistons hit the valves. The AA warns this can cause serious engine damage, and the engine can stop suddenly while you're driving.
Warning signs
Many cambelts give no warning before they fail, which is why the interval matters. Signs the AA and RAC list include a rubbing or ticking noise from the belt cover, misfires, rough idling, loss of power and difficulty starting. If you hear a rubbing noise from the front of the engine, switch it off and call us on 01908 371693.
The water pump
On many cars the cambelt also drives the water pump, and on some the belt has to come off to reach the pump. That's why the two are often replaced together. We'll tell you whether your car needs it and include it in the quote.
Belt or chain
Not every engine has a cambelt. Some use a metal timing chain inside the engine instead, and the AA notes that most BMW and Mercedes engines use chains. If you're not sure which your car has, ask us.
Our guarantee
Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months. Parts carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies from part to part.
Questions about cambelts
More answers on our FAQ page.
How often should a cambelt be changed?
Your car's maker sets the interval in miles and years. The AA says it's often somewhere between 40,000 and 100,000 miles, or every 4 years or more. Check your handbook, or call us with the registration and mileage.
What happens if a cambelt snaps?
On many engines the pistons hit the valves, which can cause serious engine damage. That's why it's worth changing the belt on time.
Should the water pump be changed at the same time?
On many cars the cambelt drives the water pump, and the belt has to come off to reach it, so the two are often replaced together. We'll tell you if your car needs it.
Does my car have a cambelt or a timing chain?
It depends on the engine. Some use a metal timing chain instead of a belt. Tell us the make, model and engine and we'll let you know.
How do I know when my cambelt was last changed?
Check the service history and any receipts that came with the car. If there's no record, it's safest to treat it as due.
