Brakes and the MOT

Brakes are one of the most common reasons cars fail their MOT. DVSA test data puts brake problems behind 6.85% of tests, after lamps and suspension. If your car has failed on its brakes, send us the failure sheet and we'll quote for the work. See MOT preparation and repairs.

Pads, discs and calipers

Pads wear every time you brake, and how fast depends on the car and how it's driven. Discs wear more slowly, but they need replacing when they're worn below the manufacturer's minimum thickness, scored or warped. A sticking caliper can make the car pull, wear the pads unevenly and make the wheel run hot. We'll tell you exactly which parts your car needs, so you only pay for what's worn.

Our guarantee

Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months. Parts carry the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies from part to part.

Questions about brakes

More answers on our FAQ page.

How do I know my brakes need looking at?

Common signs are squealing or grinding when you brake, the car pulling to one side, a soft or spongy pedal, vibration through the pedal or steering wheel, or a brake warning light. If you notice any of these, get them checked.

Is it safe to drive with a brake warning light on?

Get it checked as soon as you can. If the pedal feels soft, the car pulls hard to one side or the brakes don't feel right, don't drive it. Call us on 01908 371693 instead.

Do pads and discs always need replacing together?

Not always. Discs need replacing when they're worn below the manufacturer's minimum thickness, scored or warped. We'll tell you which you need, and what it will cost, before we start.

How long do brake pads last?

It depends on the car and how and where it's driven. Lots of town driving and stop-start traffic wears them faster. We can check how much is left and let you know.

Is brake work guaranteed?

Yes. Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months, and the parts carry the manufacturer's own warranty.
