Suspension and the MOT

Suspension is one of the most common reasons cars fail their MOT. DVSA test data puts suspension problems behind 9.08% of tests, second only to lamps and electrics. A broken, cracked or fractured coil spring is an MOT failure. If your car has failed on its suspension, send us the failure sheet and we'll quote for the work. See MOT preparation and repairs.

Sources: DVSA MOT data, as reported by Motorpoint, and the AA.

Why coil springs break

The AA explains that springs flex all the time, which can crack their protective coating. Road salt and water then get in and corrode the metal until it snaps. Worn shock absorbers make the springs work harder, and a blown tyre can put sudden strain on them. Springs often break without warning, and you may only notice a clunk or a car sitting lower on one side.

Rust around the suspension mounts

If the metal around a suspension mounting has rusted, the car can fail its MOT even when the parts themselves are fine. We weld sills, chassis and wheel arches to MOT standard. Read our guide to MOT corrosion failures.
